Polybonk is the lovechild of founders Darren Ziesing and Tom David. The concept was first conceived in 2002, combining the super-nerd programming and web design skills of Tom with Darren's musical talents. Work began in earnest on the project at the end of 2006, when Tom began designing and planning the site.

Meanwhile, Darren worked hard at preparing and mastering terrabytes of music. At the end of 2007, Polybonk underwent extensive redesigning, including a new colour scheme and modifications to the theme. Simultaneously, Darren began re-mastering a number of previously mastered tracks with newly purchased equipment, significantly improving sound quality. In 2008, Polybonk migrated to a new dedicated server in anticipation of its launch.
